Prom for the Curvy Girl

I know I have few readers in high school, so I wanted to do a post just for you guys.   Finding that perfect dress for the prom can be difficult, especially for the curvy girl.  Here are some helpful hints.

  1.  It is okay if your dress is not full length.   Wearing a cocktail, tea length, or shorter dress to a formal soiree is okay when you are young.  So have fun with the length of your dress and don't feel like you have to have the extra long dress.

  2. Finding a tailor will make your off the rack dress look like it was made just for you.   Whether getting the dress taken in, hemmed, or whatever remember that it is far easier for a tailor to make a garment smaller than to make it bigger.

  3. If buying a full length dress, take your heels with you when buying your dress and getting hemline alterations.  This will ensure that your dress hits just the right length.   Unless you have a train, you should look like you are floating.  The dress should be short enough where you won't be tripping over the bottom and long enough that just the tips of your toes peek out when you walk.

  4. I know the prom is right around the corner for most of you.  If you still havent found a dress then try some bridal shops that carry bridesmaid dresses.  You will be surprised.  Even if you find a dress that works and want to add some extra pisazz, then take it to a seamstress that does bead work.  Adding a little bead work around the bodice may give your dress that little extra something that you are looking for.

  5. Don't forget the foundation.  Get rid of that pouch with a simple high waist panty girdle.   Your prom pictures will thank you.

  6. Know your measurements.  At minimum, bust, waist, hips, and length from waist to hip.  This will help you with online shopping.  Consult the size chart to pick the correct size and remember IT IS EASIER FOR THE SEAMSTRESS TO MAKE THE DRESS SMALLER THAN BIGGER.  If you shop at a boutique, this will help the sales person an idea of what dress sizes to choose for you.
Here are some cute dresses that I found.  Excuse some of the blurry pics...I couldn't find decent images to enlarge.
