Another chick in my dress!!! ~ Plagues of the Curvy Girl

Amerie and Amber Rose probably are about a size 4 a piece, but they do pose a good question. What happens when there is another girl in your dress at a party, a wedding, or any other social event. Even with the fashion world at their feet they still managed to show up in the same dress. And even worse than that what if she looks better than you! Being a curvy girl and knowing there are limited options this tends to happen more times to the curvy girl. I think this may have happened one time in my life when I was in my early 20s and I left the the scene. So how do you keep such a thing from happening? I havent lived in fear of this happening for a couple of reasons.

One, some of the dresses I have on deck are from a few seasons ago. When wearing the major plus size clothing suppliers it is best to save them for later, b/c the latest from Lane Bryant will definitely show up at the weekend soiree.

Two, I'm a little privileged that I have known the plus size designer, Jibri (http://www.jibrionline.com/) for going on 5 years now. She is always ahead of the fashion game. She is innovative, edgy, and most of all I have yet to see a designer create for plus like she does. She prides herself on not mass producing her pieces - letting you know there is almost no chance that a girl will show up to a event with your dress on. I know one skirt in particular - there are two owners - myself and one other girl and she is in NYC...so the probability that we would show up at the same place at the same time is almost impossible. Every piece I buy is definitely worth every penny if this can be avoided.

Third, I don't wear the same dress over and over and over and over. The more times you wear a dress the more chances you meeting your event twin.

Fourth, when repeating a dress I never wear it quite the same every time. Even if you repeat a dress it should look reinvent it every time so it at least looks different.

Fifth, In the event that you walk into a event and you see your dress YOU SHOULD BE WITHOUT QUESTION THE BEST LOOKING GIRL IN IT. Make sure everything is on point, shoes, accessories, makeup, hair. This way she will probably leave the party...LOL. Ok so its a little mean girlish, but all is fair in Fashion!

Michael Jackson: The Day the Music Died

I am just as in disbelief as the rest of the world with the passing of Michael Jackson. He is a legend bigger than life itself in his own right...right up there with Elvis, John Legend, and Marilyn Monroe. I'm sure 100 years + after his death we will still be mimicking MJ. Since this is a fashion blog I wanted to bring attention to that not only has he had an astronomical influence on music, but fashion as well. His own personal style while never conventional ignited millions upon millions to follow the trends he set. Not all of them good, but on the same note what other person could influence an entire generation to get a jheri curl had to have powerful influence. You may be chuckling but you know its true. No matter where you were in the world you could not get away from his presence on pop culture, everyday life, and the world. He still influences many today with iconic MJ pieces, i.e. the one glove, the high water pants, jheri curl, sparkling socks, etc. So in memory of Mike we will pay tribute to his influence on fashion past and present...and the future. Because regardless of whether he is with in the physical or not the energy that he has left with world will forever be here. Basic physics - Energy can neither be created or destroyed. Live on Michael!

No Curvy Designers in a Curvy World

Have you ever seen a plus size Carrie Bradshaw? Think about it…probably not. Not that I am advocating for anyone to dress like Carrie Bradshaw, but I have come to realize that 98.9% of curvy girls are not trendsetters, partially because Carrie Bradshaw was born out of the countless designers (some famous and some not so famous) that were available to her at the drop of a hat. The curvy girl doesn’t have such a luxury. To be innovative and fashion forward the curvy girl has to be extremely creative because the world of fashion does not lie at our feet. This leads me to examine the reasons that in a curvy world there are only a handful of exclusively curvy designers.

The reason that there are only a handful a innovative plus size designers are because from a marketing standpoint the fashion industry’s research shows that all they have to do is wait the new trends to come out, wait about 6-8 months and then make it in plus size and make it cheaply. A lot of designers (even those that are plus size themselves) don’t even waste their time making plus size clothes or innovative ones for that matter; because in essence their research shows that the plus-size community doesn’t have the fashion sense to appreciate such garments.

When we actually get innovative and fashion forward pieces curvy girls don’t support the designer or wait until the garment goes on sale. Then what happens is the designer may quit the industry altogether or start making straight size clothes (where they stand a fighting chance of surviving).

Blog after blog I hear women complaining about the lack options for the plus size woman. In the end the fashion industry, like any other business industry, is about making a large profit margin. The fashion industry studies profit trends and whoever isn’t buying is whoever is being cut. I interact with plus size boutiques all over the U.S. and they tell me the same thing.

The straight size boutiques that have tried to carry plus size said that they could sell the garments unless they were on the clearance rack, so that cute little boutique that you would love to shop in wont offer you clothes because you won’t buy. Plus size women are obsessed with buying cheap. Forever 21 and Wet Seal are not for the fashionable adult woman...THESE STORES ARE FOR TEENAGES!

This subject seems to keep coming up as the economy has taken a turn for the worst and plus-size clothing are being cut from major department stores as well as small boutiques around the U.S. Support plus size clothing lines if you don’t you will be reduced to shopping online or those few mainstream plus-size stores or say goodbye to originality, the curvy girl will be subjected to the plus size clothes of the past. The more you keep supporting those cheap and “quality challenged” clothing the more the plus size market will be saturated with these fashion-less pieces.

US Elle - Megan FOX!

I'm so glad I decided to buy this issue. I never usually buy US Elle, but of course Fox sold it to me. We had an amusing conversation in the cupboard the other day about how we all have a girl crush on Megan, and we've been loving how the London papers have covered every Transformers' premiere she's attended.
I was SO excited to see her wearing the Alexander Wang mesh dress in this shoot.

I'm listening Meg...

BusyBusyBusy

VERY busy week gone by!
I've been interning in the Glamour fashion cupboard, can't believe my first week is already over! It has been tiring and at times stressful (no thanks to the ridiculous 48 hour tube strike), but as I keep saying, the girls there are sooo lovely :)
The closet is filled with sequinned garments, mostly of the blazer variety! (see previous posts - clearly dying for one)
Pure torture.
The pristine glossy barbie pink Loubou's that arrived for Karen today almost made me weep!
I'm a bit gutted that Oasis' sequinned copy of the Balmain dresses have already sold out - theyve been floating around and I was blissfully unaware that they were already on sale :/
Anyhows, something more interesting in the coming days perhaps as I adjust more to my 9.30-5.30 schedule.
OH!
PS. I'm off to see Britney tomorrow night!!!! Childhood dream come true :D

To tulle or not to tulle

Carrie's tulle skirt, love it or hate it, has finally peeked in mainstream everyday fashion. Spring/Summer 09 fashion trends has seemed to bring out the abundance of ladies wanting to adorn themselves in tulle skirts and dresses. And frankly, I am a little scared of what may come out of the woodwork with people trying to wear this trend. Elaborate and downright outlandish tulle first and foremost is for a certain kind of girl. If you don't have an ounce of Madonna flair about you probably need to think before you follow this trend. More conservative ladies wanting to participate in this trend, do it on a more conservative and light look with the tulle. For example, a skirt with a very light amount of tulle underneath...just to give it that little extra fullness. And by no means do any women who are older and wiser wearing tulle skirts. Yes you can be too old to wear a completely tulle skirt...sorry to rain on your parade, but I keep hearing women over 45 who want to wear tulle and I fear it is not a good idea. Curvy girl's beware too because too much tulle can have you looking like the wicked witch from "The Wiz." While I think that everyone can participate in this trend it is up to the person, their personal style, your body shape and their age on how they should wear this trend.

Curvy girl's with smaller hips a fuller skirt can help you look more proportioned and balanced...it can give the illusion of an hourglass shape.

Curvy girl's with full hips beware of too much tulle. Because your hips and buttocks are already full a lighter amount of tulle will suffice because your hips will help create a fullness with the skirt. You can still show off your tulle in the spirit of the trend, but a little will go a long way with full hips.

Eeek!

Sorry I haven't posted anything decent in a while - moved flats last week so there was a lot of packing and unpacking, then a long drive back to a cold rainy Lincolnshire last night!
I'm off to see Oasis and Kasabian (and The Enemy?) in Manchester this afternoon/evening, then tomorrow travelling back to London, sorting the rest of my packing out and prepping to officially commence my placement at Glamour magazine on Monday.
Hopefully I'll have time to post something on Sunday/Monday. In the mean time I hope everyone has an awesome weekend, despite the ton of rain that's decided to hit England after a week of sunshine!

Ciao for now :)

PS. I intend to start using Lookbook again, which may equal outfit posts if I'm brave enough :/
